Inside the paint shop

Inside the paint shop

Ninety litres of paint, three weeks and one very large wall: the making of a backdrop.

Starting small

Every backdrop starts as a model box: a scale model of the set, built by the designer, that the paint shop copies at full size. A wall that's twenty centimetres wide in the model is eight metres wide on stage.

Under the lights

Colour changes under stage light, so samples are painted, lit and adjusted before the full canvas is touched. The final wall took three weeks and five painters.
