The first read-through, the first notes and the first laugh: what happens when a company meets a new play.
Every production at the Gate starts the same way: the whole company around one long table, scripts open, reading the play aloud for the first time. Actors, designers, stage management and the creative team all hear it together.
By the end of the week the tables are gone and the floor is taped out to the size of the set. We sat down with assistant director Tom Brannigan to talk about how a cast turns words on a page into a world.
