Building a garden indoors
How our workshop team grew a living garden on the Gate's stage, one leaf at a time.

The design called for a garden that felt overgrown, lived-in and a little wild. Our workshop had six weeks to build it, and it had to pack away every night after the show. The team started with the floor: a raked platform in sections, each one dressed with moss, bark and soil that never moves, however many times an actor kneels on it.
Real plants and made ones sit side by side. The real ones are watered every morning before rehearsals start; the made ones are painted by hand so that under the lights you can't tell which is which.
